What Causes Stretch Marks?

One of the key causes of stretch marks is rapid weight gain. If you gain weight in a very short period of time, there is a good chance that you’ll end up noticing these marks. These marks can appear anywhere on your body where fat is deposited. The severity of these marks may vary according to the weight gain.
Stretch marks are a common side effect of weight training. Weight lifting causes a quick muscle gain. The new muscles cause your skin to expand or stretch, which can leave you with some of these colorful marks on your arms, chest or even backs.
A major cause of stretch marks is pregnancy. This is something that occurs to all women and no matter how hard they try to escape it, they just can't. The skin of your stomach will begin to expand during pregnancy. Also, pregnancy hormones soften the fibers in your skin, which further leads to stretch marks. Women who have several pregnancies can end up with multiple sets of visible striae.
Hormonal imbalance is another common cause of stretch marks. There are a number of different factors that trigger hormonal changes within the body. Thus, it is difficult to pick a single cause. When a hormonal imbalance takes place, it may cause elastin and collagen fibers to tear overstretched skin, leaving you with stretch marks.
The body goes through oodles of changes during puberty. A number of growth cycles that occur during puberty can lead to the development of stretch marks. In males, stretch marks usually become apparent on the back and shoulders, while in females stretch marks typically appear on the thighs, hips, and breasts.
Sometimes the excessive, extended or inappropriate use of corticosteroid creams and lotions that are used to treat eczema can lead to a development of stretch marks by reducing collagen levels and thinning the skin.
If you have a personal or family history of stretch marks (such as your father, mother) you may be more likely to develop these marks. Stretch marks may attack both male and female members of your family, However, women are more prone to developing them. You may develop stretch marks as you grow instead of just inheriting.
Sometimes, stretch marks can be caused by a rare health condition, such as Marfan syndrome or Cushing's syndrome.
